Groin problem continues to curtail Maher’s Kerry career

- Colm Keys

DOUBTS have surfaced as to how much football Anthony Maher will play for Kerry this year.

Maher (right) is one of a number of players currently not involved in Kerry’s Allianz League campaign but is continuing to play for his club Duagh. However, the nature of a groin problem that he has may stall further or prevent his Kerry return in 2018.

The towering midfielder is one of a number of established players who have not yet had game-time this spring. Killian Young, Donnchadh Walsh, Darran O’Sullivan, Tadhg Morley and Mark Griffin are among those yet to feature though David Moran did come on as a substitute against Dublin last Sunday.

O’Sullivan played a league match for Glenbeigh/Glencar last weekend, scoring freely as they managed a draw with Dr Crokes.

After the Dublin defeat, Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice hinted that O’Sullivan was in line to return against Kildare but ruled out any involvement in the game for Walsh: “There’s been complications with some of the lads returning. We’d have liked them back a bit sooner but it hasn’t happened for different reasons so we just go with what we have.”

Gavin Crowley, who showed promise in the opening games, is recovering from a wrist injury, James O’Donoghue hasn’t been seen since his brief cameo against Donegal when he sustained another calf injury while Johnny Buckley has a knee injury.

Meanwhile, the Munster Council confirmed last night that Waterford will play their two home SHC games in Limerick and Thurles: Waterford v Tipperary, June 3, Gaelic Grounds; Waterford v Cork, June 17, Thurles.

ROSCOMMON (SF v Cavan) – J Featherston; D Murray, P Domican, F Lennon; R Daly, B Stack, N Daly; T O’Rourke, C Compton; C Murtagh, N Kilroy, C Devaney; D Smith, C Lennon, D Murtagh.
