A CATASTROPHIC crash claimed the life of one man and left two of his friends seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling hit a stone wall in the early hours of yesterday.

Oisín Cahill (18) was the front-seat passenger in the car, which left the road in the singlevehicle crash on Shanaway Road at Woodstock, about 2km outside Ennis, Co Clare.

He was pronounced dead shortly after the incident, which happened about 4.20am yesterday.

Driver Darragh Killeen (19) and rear-seat passenger Enda Hickey (22) were both seriously injured in the crash and were rushed to University Hospital Limerick.

It is thought that two of the three young men are cousins.

It is understood that the three had been at a hurling match on Saturday, where two of the group were on a local team panel and one went as a spectator.

Mr Cahill and Mr Killeen are from the townland of Clonfeigh, about 5km west of Ennis. Mr Hickey is from the nearby townland of Kilmaley.

Mr Killeen was clinging to life last night, while Mr Hickey was said to be in a serious condition in hospital.

A SCHOOLBOY who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Tenerife was a “wee superstar”, his grieving father has said.

Carter Carson (9) was struck by a car while leaving a shopping centre with his family in the town of Adeje in the south of the island on Thursday, and died in hospital on Friday.

Carter (below) was on holiday with his father Stuart and his partner Clair.

Stuart told ‘Belfast Live’: “Carter was our world, with a smile that touched so many hearts. He was a football crazy kid whose loss we can’t describe.

“We would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their support, kind words and generosity.

“Rest easy, Daddy’s wee superstar.”

Spanish police launched a manhunt after a car believed to have been involved in the incident was abandoned a few kilometres from the scene.

Later, they said they had arrested two people in connection with the incident and expressed their sympathy to the family.

Carter was a pupil at Abbots Cross Primary School in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, and a statement posted on the school’s Facebook page read: “The whole school community is deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of our pupil, Carter Carson.

“Carter was a quiet, hardworking boy with lovely manners and a gentle, caring nature.

“He loved a game of football and was an enthusiastic member of our school running club and our football club.

“He was recently awarded Star Pupil of the Month and no-one had a bigger smile than Carter when he received his Star Pupil Award.”

The school added that it was working with the relevant agencies “to ensure that appropriate support is put in place for our pupils, parents and teachers as we try to deal with losing Carter in these tragic circumstances”.

Charlene Dinnen, a family friend, set up a Just Giving page to help the family with the funeral costs.

As of Sunday evening the page had raised £7,455, more than two-and-a-half times its original £3,000 target.

Newtownabbey Youth Football Club, where Carter had played football, posted on Facebook: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his friends at the club.”
