A total dog of an idea

-

ADOGisa man’s best friend. And a woman’s too. We own a Yorkie and I can attest to her unfailing loyalty and unimpeachable love.

A shaggy, yappy, busy little bundle of enthusiasm, she has brought great joy into our lives and we’d be a diminished family without her.

But we won’t be bringing her to the movies any time soon. Or taking her on a plane. Nor indeed treating her in any way that might suggest we mistake her for a human.

Because a dog is a dog. For Lola’s sake, as well as our own, we have no intention of blurring the boundaries.

Last week, pet owners brought their mutts along to a special screening of ‘Isle of Dogs’ in Dublin’s Lighthouse Cinema.

A treat for the dogs? Certainly not. The owners more like.

I flew with JetBlue across the States a few years back and the women up front had a tiny pooch in her handbag.

I’m sure the owner enjoyed the experience, but her coiffured pet was visibly stressed. But it was never about the dog.

When I’m done scribbling here, I’ll give Lola a run on the beach. She’ll chase sticks and stones, worry seaweed and act flirty with dogs well outside her league.

She’ll return drenched and exhausted. If she misses nights at the movies or jetting from Vegas to JFK, she hasn’t said.

But then she wouldn’t. She’s a dog.
