Kenny rages over ref call as Drogheda star apologises

STEPHEN KENNY was left a frustrated figure as a last-minute postponement of Dundalk’s EA Sports Cup tie added another fixture to their already-crammed calendar.

The day’s programme was almost a complete wash-out, with five of the eight matches called off.

The Waterford-Cork City, Limerick-Cobh Ramblers, St Mochta’s-Drogheda United and Shamrock Rovers-Longford Town games were postponed in plenty of time, but Dundalk were already in Dublin to play St Patrick’s Athletic when the referee deemed the Richmond Park pitch unplayable, though Kenny insisted the game should have gone ahead.

“We’re very disappointed. The pitch is in better condition today than it was when we played in the league two weeks ago,” he told Dundalk Sport.

“I’ve played in hundreds of games where the pitch has been a lot worse than that.”

Derry City came from behind to beat Finn Harps 2-1, while Adam Morgan’s goal gave Sligo Rovers a 1-0 win away to Galway United.

Meanwhile, Drogheda United’s Luke Rossiter has apologised and admitted he was “stupid and immature” to comment on Twitter about the outcome of the Belfast rape trial last week.

Rossiter has promised to donate his wages from football to Rape Crisis North East in an attempt to make amends.

“May I start by saying how deeply sorry I am for the comment I made on social media. The truth is I don’t really know why I did it as I have no reasoning behind it,” he said in a statement issued by the club.

“It was a stupid and immature thing to do. And in doing so, I have hurt and let my family, club, manager, team-mates and the Drogheda fans down and I’m sure many more.”
