Rory won hearts as exhilarating Masters left us all in the swing

-

■ The US Masters at Augusta 2018 was undoubtedly the most fascinating and exciting four days of golf seen for a very long time.

Congratulations to the winner Patrick Reed, and to so many others who made it such a success, players such as Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, etc.

For three of the four days Rory played magnificent golf, the last day sadly for him became almost match play.

Rory’s mind seemed to wander, allowing his opponent the advantage.

A small tint of enjoyment was taken from the end of the tournament, however, when it was made public that Reed’s parents were not in attendance and so failed to watch him as he lifted one of the greatest trophies in the golfing world.

It was sad to hear it was due to personal disputes between Reed’s wife and his parents.

It seemed to take some of the gloss off what was otherwise a tremendous four days of golfing competition.

They say, “You drive for show, and you putt for dough”. Never was that saying more apt than in describing Rory’s play on the last day.

One thing you did win, Rory, was the hearts of all who attended, and those who watched this fabulous game. Next year, Rory, you’ve now paid your dues.
