Drake’s Point, Crosshaven, Co Cork

ACCORDING to local folklore, when explorer Sir Francis Drake was second-in-command of the English fleet facing the Spanish Armada, he sailed up Owenboy river to Drake’s Pool, a river anchorage outside Crosshaven, to hide his vessel from the enemy.

Drake’s exploits are remembered in the name of a development by O’Flynn Construction at the picturesque village. Before the crash, O’Flynn built some 200 homes in Crosshaven as part of the Brightwater scheme in the historic harbour-side village. A further 200 homes were to be constructed nearby, under the name Drake’s Point, but just 10 were completed by 2009. Those finally went on the market at the end of 2016 before A-rated new builds were constructed at the development, aimed at commuters escaping rising rents and house prices in Cork city. Some 35 sales have been achieved at the scheme since March 2017. O’Flynn secured planning in January for 159 properties at Drake’s Point, with two and three-bed townhouses accounting for two third of the homes.

For now, as many as 20 homes have been lined up for a new phase at the Crosshaven development launching this weekend. Prices start at €230,000 for a two-bed terraced property measuring 860 sq ft, at €285,000 for a three-bed end-of-terrace style with between 983 sq ft and 1,087 sq ft of accommodation, and at €330,000 for a four-bed semi-detached house type with as much as 1,539 sq ft of living space.
