Racing 92 face tough test in Toulouse

- John Fallon

MUNSTER will be just in the door from South Africa in time to see Champions Cup opponents Racing 92 take on Toulouse in the Top 14 on Sunday afternoon.

Racing will travel to Stade Ernest Wallon for the game as the battle for play-off places intensifies.

It is one of the tightest finishes to the Top 14 in years with eight teams still in contention with three rounds of matches left.

Montpellier, on 76 points, and Racing on 70, hold the edge for the two automatic semi-final spots but just six points separate the next six sides.

Toulouse are third on 66 points so there is everything to play for on Sunday afternoon (4.50pm French time) when the Parisians come to town. Racing kept up their push for a semi-final spot when they edged out Toulon 17-13 at the U Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Their French international of Fijian descent, Virimi Vakatawa, was the hero with two tries as Toulon lost ground on a semi-final spot a week after being pipped by Munster.

The sides were deadlocked at 10-10 at the break after Malakai Fekitoa cancelled Vakatawa’s early score.

But Vakatawa struck again 12 minutes after the restart with Maxime Machenaud again converting.

All Toulon could manage was a penalty from Francois Trinh Duc as Racing held on.

Toulon now face leaders Montpellier this weekend in a crunch tie.
