Irish set for Euro test – Carruth
BOXING
OLYMPIC champion Michael Carruth reckons it will be a different dynamic outside the ropes at the European Men’s and Women’s Youth Championships in Italy.
The World Elite bronze medallist will be working Ireland’s corner for the first time at a continental tournament in Roseto degli Abruzzi this week.
Billy McClean is head coach in Italy alongside Carruth, Michael Mongan and Anita Just – coaches at the qualifiers for this year’s Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.
The 15-strong male and female squad, captained by Kane Tucker and Lauren Hogan, leave for Italy this morning.
“It’s a different dynamic in the corner from being the boxer. Billy McClean is the head coach and we also have Antia and Michael as coaches,” said AIBA coach Carruth.
“There’s every chance that we could be doubling up because we could have boxers in separate rings at the same time. It’s a big tournament because this is the first time it’s a joint men’s and women’s competition.”
SWIMMING
LAST year’s World University Games Champion Shane Ryan and World Junior Champion Mona McSharry will spearhead Ireland’s team for the European Championships in Glasgow.
Twelve athletes make the Irish side in August of this year following their first sole selection trials period, simultaneously using the Irish Open in Dublin and the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast to finalise all of their summer national teams.
ATHLETICS
SCOTLAND’S Callum Hawkins was discharged from hospital yesterday, his country has confirmed.
The runner collapsed while leading the Commonwealth Games marathon on Sunday with just a mile-and-a-half to go.
There was an initial delay in Hawkins receiving treatment as he struggled against the 27C heat, something the organising committee defended, before he was taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Hawkins was going for his first major title, after finishing fourth in last year’s World Championships.
Gremlins got into the headline in Monday’s in-brief column which incorrectly reported Lisnagarvey winning the EY Hockey League. Glennane, in fact, won the title as result of a 4-2 victory over Lisnagarvey on Saturday.
