DAA puts Dublin Airport retail units out to tender

- John Mulligan

THE DAA has put fashion and jewellery concessions at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 up for tender.

Five outlets are up for grabs, with four of the trading stores in the portfolio having generated combined sales last year of almost €4m. The four units are to be divided into five stores.

The retail units are likely to draw significant interest from traders.

Dublin Airport handled 29.6 million passengers last year, of which 18.1 million passed through Terminal 1. The passengers are almost equally split between arrivals and departures.

The passenger numbers compare with a footfall of more than

50 million on Dublin’s Grafton Street, the country’s busiest shopping thoroughfare and also one of the busiest in Europe. Henry Street, also in the capital, has an annual footfall of more than 26 million.

The DAA, whose chief executive is Dalton Philips, said that of the airside units available at Terminal 1, one is likely to be a premium men’s fashion store. It has proposed that another sells men’s and women’s fashion, while a jewellery store and a mid-range/premium accessory or sporting lifestyle fashion store are also on offer.

The existing mid-range men’s and women’s fashion outlet posted sales, excluding Vat, of

€1.6m last year. The jewellery store has sales of €1.1m, and the accessories shop €952,000. The travel solutions and luggage store had sales of €566,000.

Earlier this year, the DAA also put a large airside retail unit occupied by Boots in Terminal 1 out for tender. That outlet notched up sales of €8.3m last year.

The DAA has spent millions of euro in recent years upgrading Terminal 1. A major element of the work was a €10m facelift for its departures floor.

The semi-state has also embarked on a major projects to revamp its retail operations in Terminal 2. That will include the development of a new 14,500 sq ft duty free outlet, a large liquor store as well as other units for the sale of perfume, luggage and jewellery. The makeover will take about three years to complete.

The DAA generates more than €400m in annual retail and ancillary sales at Dublin and Cork airports.

That included total retail sales of €303m from retail concessions and food and beverage outlets. The total figure included €127.6m from other commercial activities, including its car parks.
