Money issues can stand in the way of your dream home. If you have been holding back from buying your first house or on spending money on necessary upgrades and renovation­s, then a grant scheme can be useful. At the permanent tsb Ideal Home Show, there will be stands and presentati­ons with advice and guidance where you can find out what you need and how to apply to help you along your journey to a better home.

Here are a few of the options available: BETTER ENERGY HOME SCHEME What is it?

The Better Energy Home Scheme, from the Sustainabl­e Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), provides grants to homeowners to upgrade their homes with energy-efficient measures.

What does it provide?

The grant provides up to €6,000 to homeowners to upgrade their homes. Grants are provided for installati­on of insulation in your walls and roof, fitting boilers, heat pumps and heating controls, and to install solar panels in any home built before 2006. Grants for heat pump systems and solar panels are available to all owners of homes built before 2011.

Where to find advice at the show?

You can speak to the SEAI about their Better Energy Home Scheme at Stand Q30. They will be giving advice on all their grants and other home energy savings.

HOME RENOVATION INCENTIVE SCHEME What is it?

The Home Renovation Incentive Scheme is a government scheme which is a relief from Income Tax for homeowners. You can claim this tax credit for renovation­s, repairs and improvemen­ts to your home.

What does it provide?

The scheme allows tax refunds of up to €4,050 of the cost of the home renovation and improvemen­t project. Projects that qualify for the scheme include: Painting and decorating Plastering Rewiring Plumbing Tiling Bathroom upgrades Fitted kitchens Window replacemen­ts Extensions Attic conversion­s Garages Driveways Landscapin­g Septic tanks To claim the tax refund, you must pay PAYE tax, have up-to-date local property tax payments and the work done to your property must be carried out by qualifying contractor­s.

The Revenue Commission­ers will be at Stand K45 to answer all your questions, list all the requiremen­ts and help you apply for the scheme.

FIRST TIME BUYERS – HELP TO BUY SCHEME What is it?

The Help to Buy scheme is designed to help first-time buyers with obtaining the deposit required to purchase a new house or apartment to live in as their home.

What does it provide?

When you buy or build your home, the incentive will give you a refund of Income Tax and Deposit Interest Retention Tax (DIRT) that you paid in the Republic of Ireland over the past four years. You must take out a mortgage of at least 70% of the purchase price to apply for this.

Where to find advice at the show?

Speak to the Revenue Commission­ers at Stand K45, who will be ready to give advice on the scheme, the rules in place and whether you are suitable to apply.
