Youths cup finals deliver triple helping of drama
THERE was joy for Corinthians, Galwegians and Buccaneers as they came away with the honours after a brilliant day’s rugby at The Sportsground for the U-14, U-16 and U18.5 Youths cup finals on Sunday.
The action began with the
U-14 decider as Corinthians overcame a spirited Galwegians side 17-5. An Alan Cawley try was the difference between the sides at the break, but Wegians started the second half in perfect fashion as Bobby Power touched down to level the game up. However, their opponents finished the stronger, as tries from Sean Fox and Eoghan Flannery ensured a league and cup double for Corinthians.
Galwegians still ensured they left with some bit of silverware after a 25-8 win over Monivea in a entertaining
U-16 final. It was Monivea who opened the scoring through an Evan Connolly penalty, but two first-half tries from Edward Shekete and Conor Joyce gave Wegians a 10-5 lead. Shekete touched down for his second try after the break to extend their lead, with Jack Beatty adding the resulting conversion and a penalty moments later. A Shea Hennessy try after 55 minutes gave Monivea a glimmer of hope, but Galwegians secured the win minutes later as George Hill capped off a brilliant performance to touch down.
The U18.5 final between Buccaneers and Corinthians was hampered by strong winds and deteriorating conditions as Buccs powered clear to win 31-0. The scoreline was perhaps slightly harsh on Corinthians who only trailed by five points at half-time. But as the game wore on the added quality of Buccaneers shone through in the end as they touched down four more times.
