Two charged over Anfield attack as ‘amazing’ dad still in coma

- Conor Feehan

IRISH father-of-three Sean Cox remained in a coma as two Italian men were charged yesterday with the vicious attack on him outside The Albert pub in Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

Mr Cox, from Dunboyne, Co Meath, was standing outside the landmark pub at the Anfield stadium with his brother while waiting for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final clash with Roma to get underway.

Details were given of the extent of Mr Cox’s injuries at the court where two men, Filippo Lombardi (21) and Daniele Sciusco (29), were charged.

District Judge Jack McGarva asked a police official for an update on Mr Cox’s condition at Court 4 in Sefton Magistrates Court.

“Mr Cox remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital. He is in a coma, and doctors hope on Monday to try to wake him,” said the police official.

“He [Mr Cox] had a significant bleed on the left side of his brain.”

He indicated that Mr Cox was in a medically induced coma following emergency surgery.

The information was relayed to the two accused who looked on from behind glass screens but their faces did not convey any emotion.

The hospital where Mr Cox is being treated is the Walton Neurological Centre, around 10 minutes’ drive from Anfield.

Mr Cox’s brother remained with him after the attack, and the next morning his wife Martina got on the first plane she could and has been at her husband’s side since. Their three children remained at home.

Just as the court case was about to begin, Mr Cox’s family released a statement through Merseyside Police.

“We want the world to know that Sean is the most amazing and wonderful husband, dad, friend, son, uncle, and brother and he has brought us all nothing but joy. He is a truly decent man who adores Liverpool FC and just came over from his home in Co Meath, Ireland, to watch his beloved team,” the family said.

Police official told the court there was a significant bleed on the left side of his brain

“We are completely devastated by what has happened to our lovely, caring Sean and all we want is for him to come home to his loving wife and three children.

“We hope Sean makes a full recovery from the injuries he sustained and that we will all be back together soon as a family in Ireland spending precious time together.”

His family must wait over the weekend until medics begin the process of trying to wake him.

Only then can they begin to assess the degree of injury he has received, how long or short-term it is likely to be, and if surgery was a success.
