McDERMOTT HAT-TRICK REVIVES ROSSIES

-

Roscommon 4-12 Mayo 0-11 ROSCOMMON revived their Connacht MFC campaign by hammering Mayo at Kiltoom.

A hat-trick of goals from fullforward Adam McDermott and a brilliant performance from midfielder Shane Cunnane did the trick for Paul Staunton’s side who suffered a 22-point defeat against Galway a week earlier.

Mayo had got the better of Leitrim by 21 points in their opening match but found a wounded Roscommon side a much different proposition.

Led by Cunnane, Roscommon set the tempo from the opening exchanges and opened up a 0-9 to 0-5 lead at the interval. Mayo goalkeeper Ronan Connolly also made three crucial saves to keep his side in the contest.

Enda Hession was Mayo’s scorer in chief but points from Cunnane (5), Adam McDermott (2), Enda Crawley and Aaron McDermott procured a deserved fourpoint lead for the Rossies.

Two minutes into the new half, Roscommon’s grip on proceedings strengthened when James Fitzpatrick finished emphatically to the net.

Connolly denied Robbie Dolan once more but McDermott was on hand to palm the rebound to the net for the first of his three goals in the 36th minute.

The Castlerea St Kevin’s player added another green flag in the 47th minute before confirming his hat-trick in spectacular fashion with two minutes remaining to complete a remarkable turnaround for the Rossies in the space of seven days.
