Emma says her faith restored after meeting with President

- Breda Heffernan

EMMA Mhic Mhathúna said she has faith changes will be made in CervicalCheck following a meeting with President Michael D Higgins near her Kerry home.

Mr Higgins and his wife Sabina met Ms Mhic Mhathúna and her five children for an hour yesterday where she told him about her terminal cancer diagnosis.

Speaking to the Irish Independent afterwards, she said she had been nervous beforehand but he immediately put her at ease.

“I have faith from this moment forward that CervicalCheck will be reviewed and changes will be made,” she said.

“I can only do so much. I’ve done the best I can, there is nothing else I can do. It’s up to the people who we give the power to to pull the whole thing down.”

It is two weeks since Ms Mhic Mhathúna was told about errors in her smear test results.

Since then, she said the revelations in the cervical cancer scandal had continued to flow.

“The story just gets more outrageous by the minute. People are working overtime just to keep the public informed.

“It’s so dark and secretive what’s going on and nobody was prepared for this,” she said.

Meanwhile, President Higgins last night described his meeting with Ms Mhic Mhathúna and her family as “valuable and wonderful”.
