RHUBARB YOGURT

- Katy McGuinness

Rhubarb is one of the quintessential flavours of spring and early summer, so what better time than now to test rhubarb yogurt? We were interested to note the varying calorie counts and sugar content of each of the five different yogurts tested — and also the substantial variation in price.

Dunnes Stores Simply Better Handmade Wexford Rhubarb Farmhouse Yogurt, 140g, 99C, 9/10

Simply Better’s version comes in a glass jar and the yogurt is creamier than Glenilen’s but still nice and tart; otherwise the two are quite similar. Lovely. 94 calories and 7.2g of sugar per 100g.

Tesco Finest Champagne Rhubarb West Cork Yogurt, 150g, 29c, 9/10

If you have a sweet tooth and aren’t too worried about calories, then this yogurt from Tesco, made with Clonakilty whipping cream, is the one to go for — at a bargain price. 141 calories and 14.1g of sugar per 100g.

M&S West Country Luxury Yogurt Timperley Rhubarb & Custard, 150g, €1.30, 8/10

With 134 calories and 14.5g of sugar per 100g, this rich M&S yogurt is one of the most calorific tested and has the highest sugar content of all. The texture is luscious.

Glenilen Farm Rhubarb & Natural Live Yogurt, 140g, €1.70, 8/10

This cute little glass jar contains yogurt that is thin and nicely tart, and sits on top of a thin layer of rhubarb compote (of which our testers would have liked more). 79 calories and 8.2g of sugar per 100g make this a diet-friendly choice.

Glenisk Strained Greek Style Rhubarb Yogurt, 150g, €1.60, 4/10

The “official yogurt of Irish rugby” contains 66 calories and 7.5g of sugar per 100g. It’s billed as ‘high protein’, with 8.3g per 100g. One of the ingredients is maize starch, which makes the consistency rather solid — our testers were not enthusiastic.
