Brazill’s early season form earns National Panel call-up
NAAS’s Robert Brazill has been overtaken by Flogas Irish Amateur Open winner Robin Dawson and joint runner-up Alex Gleeson in his bid to make the Irish team through the Bridgestone Order of Merit.
But the good news for the West of Ireland champion is that his early season form has been rewarded with a call-up to the GUI National Panel.
After finishing tied 37th at Royal County Down on Sunday, Brazill falls to third behind the two internationals in the race for automatic selection for the Home Internationals at Conwy in Wales from September 12-14.
The team that will seek a fifth successive Raymond Trophy victory will feature the top four players in the world rankings, the top two in the Bridgestone Order of Merit and five committee selections.
If the top two in the Bridgestone Order of Merit are already among the top four world-ranked players, as is currently the case, the two spots will revert to the Selection Committee.
There are just five more events remaining before the Order of Merit is decided – the East of Ireland, County Louth GC (June 1-4); Connacht Stroke Play, Portumna GC (June 9-10); North of Ireland, Royal Portrush GC (July 9-13); South of Ireland, Lahinch GC (July 25-29); and the AIG Irish Close, The European Club (August 4-8).
