Fun formula: Chilled chemistry for students
IN Edenderry Library, Shauna Bannon Ward’s science experiments workshop (9.3010.30am) promises to be an explosive experience for five to 12-year-olds who’ll have an opportunity to get their hands dirty in a fun introduction to chemistry. Having written her first science book at the age of 14, Shauna (pictured) went on to publish a second, and now has plans to relaunch her publishing business with genres and titles for all ages. And if that’s not enough to showcase the many talents of this extraordinary young woman, she’s just finished her second year of a law degree at Trinity College Dublin — and she’s still only 19. “I wrote the first book because I felt there wasn’t a focus on science in schools and I wanted to redress that,” she says. “To get children interested in science, you have to make it fun and interactive. The workshop I’m giving in Edenderry uses everyday ingredients, not convoluted things that nobody can find or relate to. “When I was at school the only aspects of science that interested me were experiments. Kids want to be involved, not just learn by rote. That’s how you get them motivated.” She credits her mum Sandra for helping her realise her own creative potential. “My mother advocated for me for as long as I can remember,” says Shauna. “She encouraged me to aim high and not let anything hold me back, to be independent and confident. I think we need more parents like that.”
