The Government is obsessed with novelty politics for minorities

-

■ Now that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and his Cabinet have a couple of pointless trophies to share and admire for a while, when can we expect the country to get back to real politics?

There has been a deep neglect of the pressing political issues in the State and referendums affecting two tiny minorities have taken priority over the well-being of the nation as a whole.

We are lulled into believing that real progress is underway because matters which are very much less important have been addressed.

This Government insists upon novelty politics and being seen to cater to liberal agendas, which is all part of the ‘Love Actually’ experience of gliding down the stairs of 10 Downing Street in its inner ‘Gone With The Wind’ sense of elegance.

Do they realise at all that workers are earning less than 12 years ago?

Cutbacks remain solid as a rock and general austerity is not for turning?

The sick and old, as well as the young, have limited access to fair play in health issues and others, but no matter how many TDs are lobbied, there is no expectation of resolution to our personal political lobbying of the powers that be. It is as if they don’t realise we’re all around them and floundering about seeking genuine leadership.
