I’d still choose religious education but Church must atone

-

■ I would argue with Sarah McDonald’s choice of wording (‘Result also a vote for social change’, Letters, Irish Independent, June 6).

I received both a Catholic primary and secondary education, both effectively run by the Brigidine Order, an educational path which I believed benefited me in more ways than just religious values and ideals.

Throughout my religious education I received information on contraception, the many facts of life but coupled with religious ideology, religious values, and a sense of right and wrong.

While I will admit the Catholic Church should not have undue influence on running the State, I would still opt for a religious education if given the choice.

Total separation of Church/ State is not necessary, nor would I feel it offers any real value. Is it wrong for children to grow up learning the Bible and religious values? For families of atheist values or different religions an opt out is always available.

Ireland’s identity as a Christian country may be declining, but it does not have to perish altogether.

I voted Yes in the recent referendum, a choice I’m sure would indicate a conflict of beliefs – but I choose to follow my Christian beliefs as best I can while pertaining to a modern way of thinking.

I still have faith; but in order to propel and survive in an evolving Ireland the Catholic Church must adapt. Its decline – driven by horrific cases of child abuse and horrendous stories of the mother and baby homes – has resulted in its condemnation.

It must atone for its wrongs or face extinction. It has its own role models for redemption and change.

After all, Mary Magdalene atoned for her sins, the Good Samaritan chose to help when no one else would; to be religious does not demand total obedience but a good heart is vital.

Not all of the Church hierarchy has remained in its prehistoric past. Fr Brian D’Arcy, for example, has chosen to move with the times and has in my opinion done much to improve its image.

The Church would do much to improve its image by reaching out instead of turning away.
