Sexism is wrong – in all ways

-

■ Frances Fitzgerald has demanded that the next cabinet has a 50/50 gender split.

This is something I would like to see one day, too.

But I cannot agree that it should happen in the next cabinet.

While I don’t believe the former cabinet member is cynically trying to get her old job back, she is confusing “equality of opportunity” with “equality of outcome”.

Until there is a 50/50 gender split in the larger TD population, it is wrong to try to realise it in the cabinet.

That would require favouring some TDs over others solely because of their gender.

There’s a word for that: it’s called

“sexism”.
