EV toll cut welcome – now for hybrids and parking?

- Eddie Cunningham

AS forecast here recently, electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids can now enjoy reductions in toll charges.

EV owners will only pay half the toll rate; plug-ins get 25pc off.

I think some plug-in owners never charge their cars. I think they are availing more of the price and incentive benefits than fuel consumption. But the powers that be feel plug-ins are a stepping stone to full EVs.

There may be higher levels of discount on some toll roads during off-peak times. Fair dues to all concerned for the development.

Next step? Parking incentives and maybe the inclusion of hybrids? I get it that hybrids self-charge rather than draw electricity from the national grid, but I think they are a more honest way of using batter y power.

Eligible vehicle owners can sign up with a toll tag provider. Those who already have an account will be contacted on how to transfer into the scheme.

Owners will have to register on www.etoll.ie to benefit and update details. Cars must be Irish-registered.

Also eligible are goods vehicles (vans) up to 3,500kgs who meet the criteria. Same goes for small public ser vice vehicles (taxis, hackneys limousines) – they are treated as private vehicles.
