Right side of history in Meath

-

MOYNALTY in Co Meath is a relatively modern village (by Irish standards at least), having been laid out to a linear plan only in 1837 by the Farrell family of Moynalty House.

All the same, the village has a heritage trail, walking the curious through its 19th-century origins and farther back in time to the mediaeval period and before.

You can visit the riverside site where the Donore Hoard was found in the 1980s — a cache of eighth-century bronze artefacts now in the National Museum. There’s also a mound going by the name the Hill of Homes, where once stood a Norman-era castle and mill.

A few dozen metres from the Hill of Homes is Limekiln Lodge — a recent addition to the village landscape, having been built in 1999.

Although its name salutes the past, this is a modern house in every respect, of timber frame construction, with underfloor heating and triple glazing and a C2 energy rating. Inside it’s fitted with plush and expensive features such as solid wood flooring, a Jacuzzi bath, a central vacuum system, and surround-sound stereo.

You can enjoy that sound system at its best in the open-plan living and dining room, which measures some 32ft by 14ft and has a gas-fitted fireplace.

There are double doors there to both a south-facing sunroom, where there’s a tiled floor and patio doors, and to the ash-fitted kitchen.

Of the three bedrooms, one is on the ground floor and the other two are upstairs, both en suite.

The first-floor main bathroom has a corner bath and there’s a second bathroom downstairs with a power shower.

The floor area comes to 2,324 sq ft in total.

Limekiln Lodge is for sale for €450,000 with REA T&J Gavigan (046) 924 0045.
