Village life in Cork’s suburbia

-

IT has been many decades now since Douglas lost its identity as a quiet, conscientious village near Cork and became instead a swarming, prosperous suburb of the city.

And while the older residents of Douglas may have occasion to regret the change, there’s no doubt it has brought a lot of benefits.

As a suburb, Douglas is now coming down with amenities. It has two shopping centres, a multi-screen cinema, a farmers’ market, countless restaurants, a library, primary and secondary schools, a golf course, multiple sports clubs and even a ballet school. You don’t get all that by sticking to your guns and resisting the advance of suburbia.

Lisheen, at Woodview on the Douglas Road, is half a kilometre from the two shopping centres and the South Ring Road, and about seven minutes’ drive from the city centre.

Despite its proximity to the thick of things, Lisheen enjoys a fair amount of rustic-style seclusion, not least because it’s on 0.6 acres of mature gardens with lots of full-grown trees and a formal pond.

The house itself is 3,531 sq ft on two floors, with five reception rooms downstairs. The principal one is a bay-windowed drawing room with a fireplace, and an archway here leads to a formal dining room with French doors to the garden.

The unceremonious eating will be done in the kitchen, where there’s a sunroom-style dining area and French doors to the patio.

As well as these there’s also a family room with an open fire, a conservatory opening from there, and a den.

Upstairs there’s a study and four bedrooms (two en suite), and there’s a balcony off the landing, above the front porch.

Lisheen is for sale for €1.35m with joint agents Marsh’s Auctioneers (021)
