IN 1780, while on sick leave from the military arm of the East India Company, Sir Robert Brooke set up a cotton mill on his lands in north Kildare. He rather optimistically called the new industrial village Prosperous, though within six years the mill had failed.

Prosperous, located some 40km from Dublin, went into decline in the 19th century as a result, but later recovered. It suffered again during the last recession, when the property crash left the Brookes Mill estate on the Maynooth Road partly finished.

Another developer has since bought the scheme and completed 11 houses there. These were released in mid-June as part of the second and final phase of Brookes Mill. Prices start at €275,000 for a mid-terraced three-bed home, at €285,000 for an end-ofterrace version, and at €385,000 for a fourbed detached dormer. Each home has a fully floored living room with an open fireplace, a contemporary-style kitchen/breakfast room with a tiled floor and French doors leading to the back garden, a separate utility room, and a master en suite with walk-in wardrobes.

There is off-street parking for two cars, and the fenced and seeded rear garden is not overlooked. Each home has gas-fired heating.

There’s a frequent daily bus service to Dublin, easy access to the M4, and trains to the capital from Maynooth and Sallins.
