Tariffs a key focus as Trump visits UK

THE fallout from US Pres- ident Donald Trump’s decision to impose tariffs of $34bn (€29bn) on Chinese imports last Friday looks set to continue this week.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang are due to chair a meeting of cabinet members from both countries today on a number of topics, including trade and investment, with the latest US tariffs likely to feature on the agenda.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the French Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and his German counterpart will meet to co-ordinate a strategy against potential US tariffs on imported cars and other trade conflicts.

Also on Wednesday, the US Chamber of Commerce will host Michel Barnier, the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator.

On Friday, Mr Trump is due to make his first official visit to the UK since being elected.

He’s due to meet Prime Minister Theresa May.

Domestically, Abbey releases results today, while on Thursday the Central Statistics Office will release June’s Consumer Price Index and trade data for April.
