Theresa May is victim only of her political devices and desires
■ I can’t believe that I am putting pen to paper to sympathise with Theresa May’s beleaguered plight.
We all know that throughout history not one British government nor parliament has had a moral compass pointing in any direction apart from itself, especially so in relation to Ireland, from the 12th century to the present day.
But poor old Mrs May! She was neutral in the Brexit referendum, knowing that if the result was to remain in the EU she would see the end of the two-faced Boris Johnson and would be favourite to succeed David Cameron eventually, and if the vote went the other way, she would be a certainty to succeed him immediately.
She has all that she wished for herself.
Her current plan for the security of the Border with the North is, in reality, a customs union, which is what Jeremy Corbyn has been advocating, to the condemnation of her government up to today. Her desire for a free Border exists only because of EU insistence that this should be so.
To pour incredulity upon this expedient, Mrs May now claims it is “categorically untrue that the post-Brexit relationship with the EU would make a trade deal with the US impossible”.
Has she lost all grasp on reality? What sort of trade deal would she expect to have with the US when the madman Trump is busy trying to outdo his past sociopathic policy decisions with a trade war with his allies? He launched a heightened trade war with China, which automatically answered with tariffs against US exports. Anyone with one brain cell could have predicted that.
Perhaps, after all, one shouldn’t pity Mrs May; she is a victim of her devices and desires, and no different to any other politician, especially British ones, with regard to narrow nationalism and the maintenance of their war against Britain’s working class.
