Fiesta ST put through paces 400m in salt mine

- Eddie Cunningham

USUALLY, cars such as the Ford Fiesta ST can be described as ‘fliers’, such is their power and pace.

I don’t know what you’d call an ST that has been driven at 400 metres underground in one of Europe’s largest salt mines. The ‘Fiesta SalTy’, perhaps?

With World Rally Championship driver Elfyn Evans at the wheel (but the location kept secret), the 200PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine created a wall of sound as the exhaust noise was amplified by the narrow confines.

Salt is like fine gravel to drive on – and slippery. Mr Evans reported: “You expect it to be claustrophobic but actually it’s quite the opposite and a great place to really enjoy the new Fiesta ST.”

Ford chose the secret salt mine location for a new TV advert.
