CROATIA

DANIJEL SUBASIC (Monaco, aged 33)

The late bloomer only left Croatia for Monaco in the French second tier in 2012 and his stock has risen since. An injury doubt and would be a major loss after two shoot-out heroics. Gent’s Lovre Kalinic is on standby. Rating 8

DOMAGOJ VIDA (Besitkas, 29)

Started at Osijek and went to Dinamo Zagreb via a failed stint with Bayer Leverkusen. Profile soared in five-year stay at Dinamo Kiev and some pro-Ukraine comments post-quarter-final did not go down well. Joined Besitkas last summer. 7

VEDRAN CORLUKA (Lokomotiv Moscow, 32)

Well known to English audiences as he left the Dinamo Zagreb to join Man City in 2007 before a four-year stay at Spurs. Been with Lokomotiv Moscow since 2012 and on standby to play if Sime Vrsaljko doesn’t pass a fitness test. 7

DEJAN LOVREN (Liverpool, 29)

Settled at Dinamo Zagreb before moving west to Lyon in 2010. Southampton came calling three years later and he’s made his way to Liverpool where his performance levels have fluctuated. England and Harry Kane will not be afraid. 8

IVAN STRINIC (AC Milan, 30)

A Split native who made a free transfer move from Ukrainian side Dnipro to Napoli in 2014 and is now an established operator at Serie A level who has just joined for AC Milan after a stint with Sampdoria. The first-choice left-back has never scored for Croatia or with any of his Italian clubs. 7

MARCELO BROZOVIC (Inter Milan, 25)

A creative player who is not a certainty to start. He joined Inter from Dinamo three years ago having lined out at the World Cup a year earlier. Brozaric has a fiery streak but is an energetic performer with the ability to cover a lot of ground and he’s an effective foil for the players around him. 8

LUKA MODRIC (Real Madrid, 32)

Ten years have passed since he left Dinamo Zagreb for Spurs after starring in Euro 2008 and he’s now one of the best midfielders in the world and a four-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid. He is the star man of this semi-final clash and England will have to neutralise him. 10

IVAN RAKITIC (Barcelona, 30)

Grew up in a Croatian family that had emigrated to Switzerland and his climb up the ranks was steady. Went from Basel to Schalke and to Sevilla before Barcelona made their move after the last World Cup. Croatia use him as a defensive shield with an ability to get forward. 9

IVAN PERISIC (Inter Milan, 29)

The winger has moved around a bit, taking him from his native Split to France, Belgium and Germany (where he played with Dortmund & Wolfsburg) before a 2015 relocation to Inter. He has scored 19 goals for his country which is the second highest return for the squad. 8

ANTE REBIC (Eintracht Frankfurt, 24)

Left Split for Fiorentina in 2013 but struggled to make an impact. Was consistently loaned out and he has just agreed to sign for Frankfurt after spending last season with the Bundesliga club. A speedy operator as demonstrated by his dart that led to the late penalty against Denmark. 7

MARIO MANDZUKIC (Juventus, 32)

Humble beginning in Croatia before finding his way to Dinamo as a first team pro. Wolfsburg was his big break and followed spells at Bayern and Atletico Madrid before his Juventus switch in 2015. Has won a Champions League, two Bundesligas with Bayern and three Serie As with Juve. 8

BENCH IMPACT Could do with avoiding more injuries in the defensive department, but they do have a talented reserve of midfielders and attackers with Real’s Mateo Kovacic not able to get a look-in and Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramaric another possible starter. 8 TOTAL: 95
