MILK CHOCOLATE RICE CAKES

- Katy McGuinness

We can fool ourselves that chocolate-covered rice cakes aren’t really chocolate biscuits, and almost a health food. Our testers felt there was not much difference between the rice crackers in terms of taste, and thought that in future they would choose based on price and calorie/sugar content.

Forever Health Foods Milk Chocolate Skinny Corn Cakes, 100g, €2, 9/10

These crackers from a company based in Kildare are made with corn rather than rice. Each one contains 80 calories and 3.8g of sugar. With six in each packet, our testers liked the flavour of the corn and preferred it as a cracker-base to rice. Very good.

Bunalun Organic Milk Chocolate Rice Cakes, 100g, €1.99, 8/10

The Bunalun packet contains six rice cakes, each has 82 calories and 4.5g of sugar. These have good flavour and the chocolate tastes properly chocolatey rather than just sweet.

Dunnes Stores Milk Chocolate Coated Rice Cakes, 135g, €1.89, 8/10

While there are just six rice cakes in most of the other packets tested, the Dunnes’ own brand has eight. Each contains 84 calories and 5g of sugar. Our testers liked the subtle sesame flavour — and the price.

Kallo Belgian Milk Chocolate Organic Rice Cake Thins, 90g, €2.99, 8/10

With just 56 calories and 3g of sugar per rice cake — the lowest of any of those tested — these are the ones to choose if you are counting. There are eight thin rice cakes per packet and the flavour is good.

Kelkin Milk Chocolate Rice Cakes, 100g, €2.39, 7/10

The packet contains six rice cakes; each has 83 calories and 5g of sugar. These are pleasant-tasting rather than distinctive.

Jacob’s Milk Chocolate Rice Cakes, 90g, €2.19, 6/10

There are six rice cakes in the packet, each containing 72 calories and 4.5g of sugar. Our testers said that the chocolate lacked real chocolate flavour.
