Man (24) stabbed to death as locals watched in horror

- Ralph Riegel

PEDESTRIANS and a paramedic crew stuck in traffic watched in horror as a young man was fatally stabbed following a street confrontation in a busy Cork town.

Conor Quinn (24) managed to stagger across Bridge Street in Mallow, Co Cork, and approach the shocked ambulance crew for help.

The attack, shortly before 9pm on Thursday night, was also fully captured by CCTV security cameras, which were installed on a nearby Mallow apartment complex only a few weeks ago.

Gardaí yesterday obtained a full recording of the incident.

Mallow gardaí launched a murder investigation after a post-mortem examination by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster, at Cork University Hospital (CUH), confirmed that Mr Quinn met a violent death.

The Irish Independent understands that Mr Quinn died from a single deep stab wound to the chest.

He died despite frantic efforts on Bridge Street by paramedics to stabilise his condition.

Mr Quinn was rushed to CUH but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The young man was from Ballintubber East, Loughrea, Co Galway, but had been living over recent weeks in Killavullen, a village 10km from Mallow.

Tragically, it is understood Mr Quinn was awaiting the imminent birth of his first child.

Gardaí are investigating if the fatal attack may be linked to a minor disagreement that erupted at the famous Cahirmee Horse Fair in Buttevant, just outside Mallow, earlier in the day between two groups of young men.

Mr Quinn was later out socialising with friends when the confrontation erupted on Bridge Street shortly before 9pm.

The assailant fled the scene after the stabbing.

Gardaí have appealed to the young man to come forward.

Friends of the young man, who is from Mallow and wellknown to gardaí, urged him on social media to hand himself in.

Detectives are hunting for the weapon used in the fatal attack.

Superintendent Billy Dwane appealed for anyone with information to contact Mallow garda station on (022) 31450.
