Left cynical by political collusion
■ As the saying goes, “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”. The latest revelations that our Government is investing millions in a company that is jumping at the first chance it gets to flout the spirit of the rental cap rules should dispel any idea that this Government has any real interest in quelling house prices and rents for the ordinary man in the street.
This effectively means our Government is colluding with a private enterprise to heap yet more pressure and misery on families. It seems it is not content with outrageous trolley numbers or forcing thousands waiting on appointments for a consultant to then wait years to get onto the treatment waiting list.
It is now ensuring property speculators are well looked after at the expense of the man in the street trying to buy a home or rent. Oh, and in case one might think I am saying it is solely the fault of Fine Gael, I’m not. The Labour Party in its coalition with Fine Gael after the crash, and Fianna Fáil, the present party being the tail that is wagging the dog, are also guilty by their actions and inactions, of attacking the most vulnerable in our society.
But just in case anyone might think I am pointing at Sinn Féin to save us by excluding it from a history of ineptitude by successive political parties, I’m not. I have no doubt on gaining power this party would be no different than any other we have had.
A cynical view you might say, but as someone who has voted for 40 years in every election, sadly I have finally come to the conclusion, particularly after the crash and how our politicians colluded with the EU to make the citizens of this country pay back the billions of German and French bank gambling debts, that voting in Ireland, if it is done in the hope it will change how things are done in this country, is a futile and pointless exercise.
