- Robin Schiller

AN IRISH holidaymaker has died in the US after being struck by a number of vehicles while attempting to cross a road.

The victim, a male in his mid-20s, was killed following a road collision in Austin, Texas, on Friday.

Investigators believe that the young man was struck by a truck and at least one other vehicle.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance to the victim’s family.

The deceased was not immediately identified as he was not carrying any ID, but it is understood he was originally from Dublin and was in Austin on holiday.

An investigation into the incident is being carried out by detectives from the Austin police department.

It is believed the incident occurred at 5.29am local time along the I-35 freeway near Sixth Street in Austin.

Local police are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident and the investigation is being led by detectives from the department’s vehicular homicide unit.

Senior officer Bino Cadenas said at least two road users had called 911 to report they believed they had struck a pedestrian.

“It’s still being investigated. What we do know is that two people called in – one being the semi-truck driver and another being the driver of another vehicle – thinking they had also ran over the subject,” the police officer said.

He added that the case is not being treated as a hit-andrun and that the drivers of the vehicles involved are not facing any charges.
