The Facebook Dashboard

-

What are you doing up and about?

I’ve used my daily Facebook allowance. So now, ugh, I have to interact with real people.

I knew Facebook was in trouble, but it’s a surprise to hear it’s actually being rationed.

A new Facebook “activity dashboard” lets you limit the amount of time you spend on the platform each day.

What happens if you go over? Russian bots chase you away?

Far more terrifying — you receive a polite reminder that you’ve exceeded your allotted time.

How Orwellian.

It’s not that bad. You’re not obliged to observe the limit, you can keep on Facebook-ing to your heart’s content.

You could say this was mere lip-service then?

No, if I want to show my lips to the world I’ll post a picture on Instagram. Which also now comes with an Activity Dashboard.

What’s the reasoning behind all this?

You’re going to be astonished, but there’s a school of thought that Facebook can have a negative impact on your personal life.

Hillary Clinton would agree.

A recent survey suggested teenage girls spending more than an hour a day on social media have a higher chance of suffering emotional problems.

Is there such a thing as a teenage girl who doesn’t spend an hour or more on social media?

That’s a good point — let me tweet it.

You’re not really getting this are you?

Relax, I’m done with Facebook and Instagram for the day. If you absolutely have to contact me I’ll be chronicling my digital detox...

In your diary?

...on Snapchat.
