Crash doesn’t spook Galway punters
IT WAS a bumpy journey down to Galway for sisters-in-law Vanessa (30) and Jelena (30) Jobb from Co Tyrone.
The two ladies nearly missed the festival when the bus they were travelling on crashed en route to Ballybrit.
Thankfully after some delays the coach was back on the road.
“We had a major long journey down,” Vanessa told the Irish Independent.
“Our bus driver crashed on the way down so we are lucky we made it here at all.”
Jelena was feeling relieved to be at the track and was soaking up the style.
“It’s really interesting to stand here and see all the style. It’s an eye-opener,” she said.
“I’ve been twice before and now I’m back this year. Galway is probably my favourite, to be fair. I’ve been here and have so much fun each time and was happy to come back,” she said.
Punters kicked off their weekend with a bang as they passed through the turnstiles. After strong winds and heavy rainfall throughout the week, the sun finally shone on day five of the Galway Races.
It was more good news for trainer Willie Mullins, who emerged victorious in The Guinness Handicap feature race of €100,000 with Nessun Dorma and jockey Billy Lee.
Caitriona Coyle (37), from Co Offaly, was crowned the winner of the Most Stylish Lady competition.
She wore a two-piece pants and blazer from The Walk In Wardrobe in Co Down, a
headpiece by Laura Hanlon and shoes from Zara.
“I’m shocked,” she said. “When getting ready today I felt really comfortable and I felt the outfit was something I would wear again.
“I feel really relaxed and Fridays at the Galway Races are always relaxed,” she added.
She won a €1,500 Athlone Towncentre shopping spree,
and a two-night luxury hotel and spa break at Sheraton Athlone Hotel.
Meanwhile, local Galway woman Kate Molloy was enjoying a day with family and friends.
“This is my third time here. I’m here for the fashion and the glamour and the odd bit of betting.
“It didn’t take me too long to get ready.
“I’m pretty new to it but my friends have been at it for a long time. I’m learning the ropes.”
FAI chief executive John Delaney was accompanied by his fiancée Emma English for the day.
“Normally I do [go to the races every year]. I enjoy it. I’m not a big racing person but I enjoy the day out,” he said.
