God save America from Trump

- Castletownbere, Co Cork

■ It speaks volumes when Donald Trump urges his attorney general to put an end to a specially appointed FBI investigation through the means of Twitter, and not as any sane premier, guilty or not, through his/her private staff meetings.

Jeff Sessions, not especially known for his moral rectitude, recused himself from the FBI investigation of Russian involvement in the presidential election, to the immense ire of Trump.

Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein has so far resisted Trump’s attacks on him – Trump’s own White House appointee – to close the special prosecutor’s investigation. Trump would give his eye teeth to be rid of these two, hoping that if he exerts enough bullyboy pressure they might resign. He knows that if he fires them he will surely be impeached, as even US politicians would recognise the enormity of the corruption that would lead to such an action.

What has led to Trump’s current “aggrieved” outburst? At least two things. Let’s put Putin on hold for the moment.

Trump’s latest nightmare is the opening of the trial of Paul Manafort, his former campaign manager, whom Trump has denied a number of times, even before the cock crowed.

Manafort has so far resisted turning state’s evidence, even knowing the evidence against him is overwhelming because he believes Trump will give him a presidential pardon after he is found guilty. Manafort would do well to give credence to Psalm 146: 3-5: “Put not your trust in Princes.”

Secondly, one of Trump’s greatest mistakes – his additional denial of Michael Cohen, the keeper of the secrets.

Well, he was until the FBI successfully obtained his records, tape recordings and his mobile telephone conversations. We are told they reveal Trump’s knowledge of his son’s meeting with Russian government agents and his involvement in the attempted cover-up.

And, to no one’s surprise, Trump’s knowledge of payments to women with whom he had extra-marital affairs, which he has consistently denied to the American people.

As always, the oppressed, the exploited and the poor in US society have been used and abused for the personal glorification of the incumbent.

All presidential addresses end with the words “God bless America”. For their sakes, this should be changed to “God help those Americans in need”.

Because Trump certainly won’t.
