MAHREZ IN LINE FOR CITY DEBUT AT WEMBLEY

-

RIYAD MAHREZ is back in training with Manchester City and is expected to make his full debut in tomorrow’s Community Shield against Chelsea.

Mahrez was substituted during the first half of City’s 3-2 friendly win against Bayern Munich in Miami last week after suffering an ankle injury.

The Algerian, who arrived in a club-record £60m deal from Leicester City this summer, subsequently returned to Manchester on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Scans earlier this week, however, revealed no significant damage and Pep Guardiola, the City manager, said yesterday that Mahrez is fit.

“He’s good,” Guardiola said, when asked for an update on the 27-year-old. “A bit of pain but he trained yesterday and today and it’s better than it was. I think he will play (against Chelsea), yes.”

Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne will be the only absentees for City, with the pair yet to return from holiday after the World Cup.

Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph and Vincent Kompany – who also progressed to the latter stages of the tournament – cut their three-week off-season break short and reported back to Manchester early, but all three are unlikely to start tomorrow. Meanwhile, Gabriel Jesus has signed a two-year contract extension with City, which will keep him at the Etihad until 2023.

Jesus, still only 21 years old, has been rewarded for settling well at City since completing his move from Palmeiras in early 2017.

The Brazil international has scored 24 goals in 53 appearances for the club so far.
