‘Don’t heap pressure on young people over results’ – Samaritans

- Ian Begley

A CHARITY is calling on students, parents and peers not to put any unacceptable pressure on young people getting their exam results today.

With more than 55,000 students receiving their Leaving Certificate results this morning, Samaritans Ireland says it’s crucial that emotional well-being is more important than grades.

Cindy O’Shea, Irish regional director for Samaritans, said anyone who was feeling anxious or disappointed should talk to someone about dealing with their worries.

“It is also helpful for young people to think about how they can relax and distract themselves so that they are able to take a break from thinking about their results,” she said.

“Anyone worried about themselves or a student can contact Samaritans for free from any phone on 116 123, text 087 260 9090, or email jo@samaritans. ie.”

Dublin Samaritans will have its ‘Feet on the Street’ team out in Temple Bar this evening between 8.30pm and 10.30pm to meet young people who may need emotional support.

Meanwhile, the Ombudsman for Children, Dr Niall Muldoon, emphasised that how you act as a person and around others is more important than any score in a test.

“If the results do not go the way you expected, please don’t be disappointed or upset,” he said. “Allow yourself time to reflect and then regroup to consider how you might move forward from here.

“It is the ability to find alternative routes that makes all the best explorers great – the willingness to forge a new path when the obvious one is closed off.”
