Punishing diesels; joggers; more tax

- ecunningham@independent.ie

Eddie,

I don’t wish to be disparaging but it is not fair for ministers to be talking about electric cars as the future mode of transport in the absence of anything else.

I live in a rural area and travel 150km a day. I need diesel. Nothing else is any good to me.

I’m terrified my car is losing value because of all the talk about electric vehicles and the death of diesel.

Talk like that is taking hundreds, maybe even thousands, of euro out of my pocket in lower trade-in prices.

Ministers have a responsibility to all drivers, not just those who can get by on EVs. Noel, Galway

Eddie,

Your piece on joggers was spot on. We hear a lot about cyclists so it is no harm to highlight the runners, some of whom have no road etiquette at all.

Last night I witnessed a jogger run straight through the traffic lights at the junction of a bridge in Waterford and gesture at cars who had just got a green light to stop and allow him to run unimpeded in case his personal best time might be affected.

Sean, Waterford.

Eddie,

What are the odds we’ll have to pay more road tax and VRT on new cars because of this new emissions test you seem to be reporting on every week?

No government is going to ignore the opportunity to plunder more cash from motoring.

Anne Marie, Dublin
