SUSI is not only source of funding

THE SUSI grant is the main source of financial assistance for many students. However, there are funds and bursaries available, as well as private finance options, for those who may need them.

Q The Student Assistance Fund assists students who find themselves in financial difficulty. It is not possible to apply for this funding in advance of entering college. The amount varies, on a case-to-case basis. Most colleges flag its existence during orientation week.

Q Fund for Students with Disabilities is available to students in both further and higher education. For details, see studentfinance.ie or the disability office in your college.

Q Credit unions all over the country offer bursaries to young members who are embarking on their third-level journey. The schemes vary widely in the amount of funding available and the application process. Some award bursaries based on academic excellence and others by public draw. Now is the time to enquire about your local scheme.

Q A number of credit unions and financial institutions offer loans specifically to assist with the cost of third-level education.

Q Most colleges have their own bursary or scholarship schemes, such as entrance scholarships for new students who achieve a certain standard in their Leaving Cert. There may also be awards specific to a particular department or course, or provided by a professional institution, e.g. women in engineering. All students should take the time to find out about such opportunities.
