US senator and war hero McCain ‘in his final days’

- Nick Allen

JOHN McCAIN, the US senator and former Republican presidential nominee, has decided to discontinue his treatment for brain cancer.

It is a sign that the 81-year-old war hero, who was tortured during five-and-a-half years as a prisoner in Vietnam, has lost his final battle.

People close to him said the senator was “entering his final days”.

In a statement, the McCain family said: “John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.

“With his usual strength of will, he has chosen to discontinue medical treatment.”

His wife Cindy said: “I love my husband with all my heart. God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey.” In 2008, Mr McCain won the presidential nomination, but lost the race for the White House to his Democrat opponent, Barack Obama.

He has represented Arizona in the US Senate for 31 years. Last July he was diagnosed with brain cancer and he left Washington for his Arizona ranch in December.

But he has remained a vocal critic of Donald Trump, and has previously indicated he does not want the president to attend his funeral.

He called Mr Trump’s recent summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin “disgraceful” and voted against the president’s plan to repeal ObamaCare last year.

Their feud began in 2015 when Mr McCain said Mr Trump had “fired up the crazies”. Mr Trump told the senator he was “not a war hero” adding, “I like people who weren’t captured.” (© Daily Telegraph, London)
