Declan Rice would be welcomed back with open arms, says Coleman

- Daniel McDonnell

SEAMUS COLEMAN says that Declan Rice would be welcomed back to the Irish dressing room with open arms.

And it’s believed there is growing confidence within the Ireland camp that the West Ham youngster will reject the opportunity to pursue an international career with England.

Rice caused a storm by opting to turn down a call for tonight’s UEFA Nations League opener with Wales.

The 19-year-old came in for strong criticism, with Kevin Kilbane leading a chorus of ex-players who feel he should not be given another chance after expressing doubts.

However, Irish skipper Coleman indicated last night that he has made contact with the teenager. He asserted that he understands Rice’s dilemma and feels that the player has been sincere in terms of all his dealings with the Ireland squad.

“On Declan’s situation, I spoke last week... some people back home might not like to hear it. He’s a 19-year-old boy who was born in England and there’s no reason why he can’t be a proud Irishman.

“After the Turkey game, where he got Man of the Match, I saw him embrace his father in the tunnel and that’s not for show. That’s genuine.

“He was genuinely proud to play in the games that he did and in an ideal world we’d get him back. It’s not straightforward.

“The young lad was born in England. There’s no reason why he can’t feel in some part English and also be very proud to play for Ireland, which I know he is.

“So on that situation, fingers crossed, we’d welcome Declan back with open arms... whatever he decides.”

Irish boss Martin O’Neill says there has been no further contact with Rice, but several players have made contact with Rice and feel there is still a strong possibility that he will commit his long-term future to the Ireland team.
