Golf’s secret: Be happy with what life gives you

-

GUATEMALA’S World Amateur Team Championship squad wore black ribbons on their caps as a mark of respect to the dozens who lost their lives when the Fuego volcano erupted in their homeland in June.

And for one member of the women’s team, the tragic loss of life was a reminder to everyone to enjoy each day to the fullest.

At the age of 70, Beatriz Arenas (inset) was participating in her 12th Espirito Santo Trophy since her debut in 1980, and while she has missed eight editions since then to give birth to five children, her philosophy of life and sport is an example of the power of positive thinking.

“It’s part of my life,” said the grandmother of 16, who shot rounds of 83,

88, 87 and 84 in the company of girls younger than all her grandchildren to finish tied 160th in the 170-strong field. “I think competing helps me to stay healthy and strong, I don’t feel my age,” added Beatriz, who looks far younger than her 70 years and plans to play in next week’s Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Grange.

“My mother got me into this beautiful sport when I was eight,” she said.

As for the secret of her longevity, she smiled.

“I am 70 years of age,” she said. “I don’t take liquor, and I never get on top of a car (buggy) playing golf. Never. I walk and walk. Even if I am tired, I still walk.

“What I really think it’s to be positive in life. Be happy with what life gives you. That’s makes you strong.”
