Whyte’s

When the young Bono (he was Paul Hewson then) sat his Intermediate Certificate, his copy of William Goulding’s Lord of the Flies ended up in Mount Temple Comprehensive School’s end-of-year book sale. Now, the book (€400 to €600) is coming up for sale as part of Whyte’s Eclectic Collector auction tomorrow at 11am. It’s more than a memento of his school days as Lord of the Flies inspired the song ‘Shadows and Tall Trees’ (Boy: 1980), which takes its name from chapter 7. Other pieces in the sale include the chair from which Padraig Pearse conducted school operations. See whytes.ie.

Adam’s

The potential top lot at Adam’s auction of Jewellery and Fine Watches, which takes place on September 18 at 6pm, is a diamond necklace by Mauboussin (est €120,000 to €180,000). It’s designed as two graduating rows of round brilliant and baguette-cut diamonds, and dates from around 1955. Other pieces include two brooches by Andrew Grima, whose work can sometimes be seen on Queen Elizabeth’s lapel. One is a gem-set and gold leaf brooch (1963), designed as a textured gold leaf highlighted with pearshaped aquamarines, blue sapphires and a diamond (est. €2,500 to €3,500). See adams.ie.
