Looking for a winter jacket that will protect children, from tots to teens, against wet and wintry weather? Here are three A-listers.

- Fiona Ness

Lego Tech Josie 711 www.legowear.com €90

Lego Tech is the gold standard in bright and beautiful, multipurpose wet weather wear for children. The toy brand’s durable jackets combine warmth with sealed seams and waterproofing within a breathable shell. No more sweating under plastic-coated rainwear (which rips easily too). With insulating padding and microfleece lining, use a technical fibre detergent when washing for best results. Lego jackets take a real battering and you’ll get a least two winters out of them as long as you’re aware that sizes are on the small side. You’ll pay an extra €30 for a pattern or Lego character design. Selected designs available in Arnotts, Dublin.

North Face Chakal www.thenorthface.ie €180

North Face is a tried and trusted mountaineering brand that has attracted fashion kudos too. You’ll pay princely sums for its excellent technical jackets, but for this you’ll have total peace of mind that your offspring are protected from everything the Irish weather can throw at them. This lightweight, stretchy fabric is comfortable to wear and is compatible with North Face layering garments. Its colour combo works for boys and girls so extra hand-me-down points there, too.

Pecola insulated www.regatta.ie, €70

Regatta offers some good discount bargains in lesser-known brands, so go rummaging. This jacket has heat and waterproofing, with an urban workwear feel. The faux fur hood and high shine fabric keeps kids snug and chic while reflective strips keep them visible in the evening hours. With taped seams, a water-repellent finish and Thermo-Guard insulation, it’s a decent walk-to-school option.
