City star De Bruyne in mix to make shock return for Reds trip

-

KEVIN DE BRUYNE could make a surprise return for Manchester City’s trip to Liverpool tomorrow.

De Bruyne suffered lateral ligament damage to his right knee in August, which was expected to rule him out for two to three months but the Belgian returned to full training earlier this week, ahead of City’s Champions League tie in Hoffenheim.

De Bruyne continued to train with the first team throughout the week and City boss Pep Guardiola has now suggested he could feature at Anfield, subject to a late fitness test.

“He made part of the training today,” Guardiola said of the 27-year-old. “He’s training with us so we’’ll see tomorrow.”

Guardiola also confirmed that Benjamin Mendy is back in training following a spell out on the sidelines.

The full-back, who has not featured since the victory over Newcastle United in early September, could also return to play against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Guardiola has called on Liverpool supporters to be as friendly as they “supposedly are” at Anfield. Guardiola was left furious in April when City’s team bus was hit by projectiles on its way into Anfield for their Champions League quarter-final tie.

“I think the best way to protect the bus is for the Liverpool fans to be as Liverpool fans supposedly are,” the City manager said. (© Independent News Service)
