IRELAND RATINGS DANIEL McDONNELL

-

7 DARREN RANDOLPH

Clean sheet and did whatever he needed to do competently. Denmark didn’t put him under a huge amount of pressure but was a safe pair of hands when they tried their luck.

7 RICHARD KEOGH

Picked as skipper because he’s a good talker and was quite solid on the right side of the back three. It turns out he was the main beneficiary from the friendly in Poland.

7 KEVIN LONG

He always does a decent job when called upon and his inclusion ahead of Ciaran Clark wasn’t really a surprise. The Burnley back-up is a steady operator.

5 HARRY ARTER

Tried hard and made one goal-line clearance but lacks discipline for holding role and was fortunate Denmark didn’t expose positional weaknesses.

5 CALLUM O’DOWDA

Curtailed involvement due to early knock and complained of feeling dizzy before his half-time withdrawal. Limited scope for Bristol City player to show what he can do.

6 SHANE LONG

We’ve seen this game before, with Long isolated for periods although this system should get bodies to him. He did win his fair share of free-kicks but didn’t threaten a goal.

6 MATT DOHERTY

He wasn’t happy with how the game went and struggled to really make an impact in a side which didn’t have the ball for long spells – a contrast from his club.

6 SHANE DUFFY

Did the basics reasonably well, although he almost got the team into trouble with one late pass. If the instructions were to sit deep, he followed them.

6 JAMES McCLEAN

He was basically played out of position for the entire game after starting as wingback and switching inside. Energetic and determined but found it difficult.

6 CYRUS CHRISTIE

An unexpected midfield role and his busy approach received some praise, yet it would be a stretch to say he looked comfortable in the position.

5 JEFF HENDRICK

Another curious evening in an Irish shirt for Hendrick with a miss after the early mix-up summing it up. Much more comfortable once he was moved to deeper role.

6 MANAGER MARTIN O’NEILL

Tried something different with his system and got back three right but shape of midfield did not address creativity issues. Tuesday needs to be better.

SUBSTITUTES

Enda Stevens 7 for O’Dowda (45): The Sheffield United player made a positive contribution and gave better balance.

Callum Robinson 7 for Arter (65): He brought a bit of spark to proceedings and strong case for picking him on Tuesday

Aiden O’Brien 6 for S Long (83): Worked hard in his cameo
