Time to solve the Irish question, once and for all
EVER since Richard ‘Strongbow’ de Clare stepped onto Irish soil in 1169, the ‘Irish question’ has caused a lot of headaches for the British establishment.
Britain has never dealt adequately with the Irish question. They tried to solve the conundrum with the Tudor conquest, the Cromwellian conquest, the Williamite wars, numerous plantations, etc. There have been many wars and rebellions, culminating with the War of Independence when Britain carved up the island in 1922.
The Irish question was not solved and we had the 30-year Troubles, which ended with the Good Friday Agreement.
Still the Irish question is not solved and it is now preventing the British from having an orderly exit from the European Union. Now is the time to solve the Irish question once and for all. Britain – do the right thing. John Moffitt Swords, Co Dublin
