Support group proves once again that Vicky is a role model for us all
CONGRATULATIONS to that wonderful lady Vicky Phelan, who announced she is setting up a cancer support group to help patients and their families.
Ms Phelan, who launched a patient support group for the more than 220 women affected by the CervicalCheck scandal, said on Sunday that the group aims to help and support women suffering from cervical cancer after misreported smear tests.
She was supported at the launch in the Phoenix Park by prominent campaigners Stephen Teap and Lorraine Walsh. She went on to say that establishing this support group has given her a great sense of purpose and a new meaning to her life. The group is also going to fight for public accountability laws to be legislated for and put in place as soon as possible – not only in the health sector, but across the public sector and the civil service, because it just does not exist in this country at the present time, she said.
Attending a professionally facilitated support group on a regular basis is a wonderful way to help cancer patients and their families to access healing and to connect with others who are on the same journey.
Support groups offer a safe, open, trusting and caring environment that allows patients who have much in common to talk freely about their experiences.
This psycho-oncology support will allow them to heal psychologically and physically. The medical experts now fully agree that both go hand in hand. Vicky Phelan is a role model for us all. Tom Towey Cloonacool, Co Sligo
