‘My mum knows me better than anyone else,’ says Saoirse

- Sorcha O’Connor

IT’S a case of mother knows best for Saoirse Ronan, as she says the “unusual” relationship she has with her mother Monica means she understands her better than anyone else.

The Oscar-nominated Carlow actress said having her mum by her side as she navigated her way through the highs and lows of Hollywood has helped her find her way in life.

Speaking to ‘ELLE Australia’, the actress said that her mother was the most important role model in her life and said her only-child status had brought her closer to her mum.

“For me, my mother. I know everyone says that but mum and I have quite an unusual relationship. I’m an only child so we were always very close, but she came away and worked with me as well,” said the 24-year-old.

“She played a huge part in my career from the very beginning, and understands how I work and how I think in a way that nobody else does. She’s been incredible for me.”

Ronan, who has carved out a stellar acting career and is set to star in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ alongside Margot Robbie later this year, admitted firm friendships have also helped to keep her grounded.

“And also my mates like my friends Alex, Scarlet, and Eileen. We’ve all gone through changes together and discuss things together and work things out together,” she said.

“I think having a few consistent figures in your life when everything else around you is changing is really important.”

In the sit-down interview with fellow ‘face’ of Calvin Klein Women, Lupita Nyong’o, the ‘Lady Bird’ star said getting to work with other successful actresses keeps her work challenging, as they are a source of motivation for her to keep improving.

“I think when you’re surrounded by other people who are great at what they do, it inspires you and pushes you to do better and motivates you to want to do more,” she said.

“Doing the awards circuit last year with Margot and Fran McDormand and women like that was incredible because they are all so great at what they do.

“I get to work with so many brilliant women in film and some have become really close friends,” she added.

“Greta Gerwig – she’s like my hero!”
