TRICK or treaters will have to wrap up warm for Halloween as cold, frosty conditions are set to dominate for the first half of the week.

Met Éireann is expecting temperatures to dip below freezing overnight tonight and tomorrow night, and could reach as low as -3C.

Forecasters warned that some roads may be affected by icy conditions, particularly this morning and tomorrow morning, with motorists urged to take care if using untreated roads.

Yesterday saw the first snow of the season with a dusting on some mountain tops.

Met Éireann said temperatures are lower than usual for this time of year and will remain so until it begins to warm up a little bit towards the second half of the week.

Temperatures are not expected to rise above 9C between today and Wednesday, and will range between -3C and 3C overnight.

The Inner City Helping Homeless group last night called on Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy to open additional emergency beds this week as temperatures drop.

It said 26 people have died on the streets in the last 16 months, including a man who was found on a park bench in Co Monaghan last week.

“People are suffering and we will see further deaths with temperatures dropping so low over the coming days,” said chief executive Anthony Flynn.

“I am calling on the minister and the Dublin Region Homeless Executive to open the additional 200 cold weather initiative beds this week without delay.”

While today and tomorrow will be mainly dry, there will be some scattered showers on Wednesday.

“It’s going to be cold up to Thursday,” a forecaster said.

“Overall it will be rather cold with frosty nights and then Thursday it will still be cold, but less frosty and then some wet and windy weather pushing into Thursday night.

“It’ll be relatively cold, colder than normal for this time of the year.”

Friday will be wet and very windy with possible gales.
